Windows 11 update reportedly fixes mouse stutter in some games
Microsoft's October 2026 Patch Tuesday update, KB5127648, includes a fix for a Windows 11 bug that could cause mouse input to stutter in some games, according to the release notes. The short entry, filed under "Gaming," indicates the stutter was a Windows-side issue rather than a fault with a mouse or its driver. The update was released on October 13, 2026.
What's happening
Microsoft's changelog for KB5127648 states plainly: "[Gaming] This update fixes an issue that could cause mouse input to stutter in some games." According to Windows Latest, the entry is easy to miss, and the fix was not present in the September 22, 2026 optional preview update (KB5124010), which suggests it is new in October.
Microsoft has not said what caused the stutter, which specific games were affected, or how many users were affected, so those details are unknown. According to Windows Latest, some affected players reported odd behaviour before the fix, such as a camera view suddenly spinning or a cursor drifting while turning, in titles reported by users including Star Wars: The Old Republic, Final Fantasy XIV, and The Division 2. Those are user reports; the company has not confirmed a single common cause. Some of those users had reportedly tried new mice, lower polling rates, and clean installs without success, while others suspected their GPU drivers.
Who's affected
The fix applies to Windows 11 versions 24H2, 25H2, and 26H2. KB5127648 moves them to OS builds 26100.9711 (24H2), 26200.9711 (25H2), and 26300.9711 (26H2), according to Microsoft and Windows Latest. Anyone on these versions who experienced mouse stutter in games may benefit, but the bug appears to affect only some games and some users rather than every system.
One caveat applies to older systems: October 2026 is the last update for Windows 11 24H2 Home and Pro, per Microsoft's release notes. Devices on those editions will no longer receive monthly security and preview updates, so Microsoft recommends upgrading to a newer version of Windows 11.
What to do
- Install the October 13, 2026 update, KB5127648, via Settings > Windows Update > Check for updates, then restart your PC. This is Microsoft's stated fix for the mouse-stutter issue.
- If Windows Update keeps failing, you can download the offline installer (.msu) for KB5127648 from the Microsoft Update Catalog.
- If games still stutter after updating, the cause may be elsewhere: Windows Latest lists possible factors such as an outdated mouse, USB, or GPU driver, G-SYNC or Adaptive Sync, wireless interference, very high polling rates, and docking stations.
- If you are on Windows 11 24H2 Home or Pro, plan an upgrade to 25H2 or 26H2, since 24H2 will no longer receive updates after October 2026.
- There is no separate manual patch to apply: the fix ships as part of the regular cumulative update.
