Windows 11 KB5127648 & KB5126653 cumulative updates released
Microsoft has released the Patch Tuesday Windows 11 cumulative updates KB5127648 and KB5126653 for versions 26H2/25H2/24H2 and 23H2, fixing security vulnerabilities and bugs, and adding some new features. The updates arrived with the October 2026 Patch Tuesday on 13 October 2026.
What's happening
According to BleepingComputer, the updates are mandatory because they contain the October 2026 Patch Tuesday security patches for hundreds of vulnerabilities discovered in previous months. This is reportedly the tenth Patch Tuesday release of 2026, and it is based on version 24H2 — which means 25H2 and 26H2 receive the same package, with no exclusive or special changes between those versions.
The update brings a mix of fixes and small feature additions. Per BleepingComputer, these include:
- Emoji: support for Emoji 17.0 (such as "distorted face", "fight cloud" and "hairy creature") plus refined designs for several existing emoji.
- File Explorer: adjustments to how the preview pane handles files downloaded from the web, a "Preview anyway" button for HTML files, preserved expand/collapse state on File Explorer Home, and more reliable thumbnail previews for cloud files.
- Widgets: a new "Tips" widget for the Widgets board and lock screen.
- Personalization: several improvements to desktop background and slideshow behaviour, including support for using DIB image files as wallpapers.
- Bluetooth: reliability fixes for audio accessories, including a fix for a crash (error code
0x139) that could occur while streaming Bluetooth audio. - Accessibility: a new "Open apps maximized" setting that automatically maximizes app windows as they open.
Separately, Neowin reports that the KB5127648 update addresses bugs related to AC-3 audio and a black-screen issue. It is worth noting that the exact set of fixes can differ between Windows 11 releases and can change as Microsoft updates its release notes, so check your own edition's notes.
Who's affected
- Windows 11 users on versions 26H2, 25H2, 24H2 and 23H2. Because the update carries security fixes, most users on those versions will be offered it through Windows Update.
- Anyone who relies on the affected components — for example Bluetooth audio accessories, cloud-synced files in File Explorer, and desktop background or multi-monitor setups.
- People on editions approaching or past end of support. Microsoft has been retiring some Windows 11 editions; if your version is out of support, plan an upgrade as well as this update.
What to do
- Install it through Windows Update. Go to Start > Settings > Windows Update and click "Check for updates".
- Or download it manually from the Microsoft Update Catalog if you manage several machines or Windows Update is failing.
- Treat it as routine but not optional. The update includes this month's security patches, so install it reasonably soon and reboot when prompted.
- If something breaks, check Microsoft's Windows release-health information before assuming the update is faulty, and note that some new features may roll out gradually.
