GrapheneOS has fixed the Android 17 QPR1 kernel performance regression on Pixels

GrapheneOS says it has fixed a performance regression introduced with Android 17 QPR1 on Pixel devices, which reportedly caused stuttering, lag and occasional freezes under memory pressure. The project published the fix in its 2 October 2026 release, roughly two weeks after Android 17 QPR1 rolled out to Pixels on 15 September 2026. According to GrapheneOS, Google has not yet shipped its own fix for the same issue.

What's happening

In an announcement on the GrapheneOS discussion forum dated 2 October 2026, the project said Android 17 QPR1 was released for Pixels on 15 September 2026 and contains a regression in the Pixel kernel driver tree. The project describes the effect as stuttering, lag and "outright freezes" under memory pressure, and says the problem is severe enough that processes may be killed for stalls.

GrapheneOS says the regression affects it too, because it updated the Pixel firmware and drivers when it moved to the QPR1 code. Its own release on 2 October 2026 includes a fix. The project's official releases page confirms the change: the 2026100200 release notes describe a kernel change to "restore Android 17 (CP2A) mmap read-ahead behavior to resolve stuttering due to memory pressure caused by an upstream Pixel kernel change in Android 17 QPR1." In other words, the underlying change came from Google's Pixel kernel, and GrapheneOS reverted the read-ahead behavior that triggered the slowdowns.

GrapheneOS also used the announcement to criticise Google's release cadence, saying it usually takes 2-3 months for Google to ship fixes for severe regressions and security issues. It says it is unclear when Google will ship a fix for this issue and that "December 2026 wouldn't be a surprise." Separately, the project says it has been looking at reducing memory use and wants to ship an improvement to its secure-spawning feature's memory footprint before November 2026.

Who's affected

  • Pixel devices running Android 17 QPR1. The regression is in the Pixel kernel driver tree that shipped with Android 17 QPR1, which GrapheneOS says was released for Pixels on 15 September 2026. Stock Pixel OS devices on that release are therefore the primary group.
  • GrapheneOS users who moved to the QPR1 firmware and drivers. GrapheneOS says the same underlying change affected its builds once it updated the Pixel firmware/drivers, and that it fixed this for its release on 2 October 2026.
  • It shows up mainly under memory pressure. The symptoms are described as stutter, lag and freezes when memory runs low. Reports from users in the discussion thread are mixed: some said their device had felt sluggish, while others reported no slowdown, suggesting the effect depends on workload and available memory.
  • Non-Pixel and non-QPR1 devices are not described as affected in the project's announcement, which ties the problem specifically to an upstream change in the Pixel kernel in Android 17 QPR1.

What to do

  • On GrapheneOS, update. The fix is included in GrapheneOS releases from 2 October 2026 onward, including the 2026100200 release. Installing the current GrapheneOS release is the straightforward step, and GrapheneOS uses automatic over-the-air updates by default.
  • On stock Pixel OS, there is no confirmed vendor fix yet. GrapheneOS says it is unclear when Google will ship a fix. If you are on Android 17 QPR1 and notice stutter or freezes, this release is one reported cause; watch your device's system-update channel for a Pixel update.
  • Do not try to force a downgrade. GrapheneOS notes that downgrades are generally not possible without a specially signed downgrade package, so rolling back the OS is not a simple workaround. Avoid unofficial guides that claim otherwise.
  • Reduce memory pressure in the meantime. The symptoms are tied to low free memory. Users in the discussion thread suggest that closing or force-stopping unusually memory-hungry apps, and rebooting, may help alleviate slowdowns — treat this as user advice rather than an official fix.
  • Watch the project's release notes. This is an evolving situation; the GrapheneOS releases page and its announcements are the most direct place to confirm exactly which build contains the change.
